Gear Up Right the First Time: How to Choose the Best Materials for your Next Pack

Updated: Jan 18

Choosing the right hiking backpack involves more than just finding the right size and fit. The materials used in the construction of a backpack significantly impact its performance, durability, comfort, and weight. We'll compare common backpack materials to help you make an informed decision for your next outdoor adventure.

Nylon

Durability: Nylon is one of the most commonly used materials in hiking backpacks due to its excellent durability. It is resistant to abrasion and tearing, making it ideal for rugged terrains.

Comfort: Nylon packs are relatively comfortable, but their stiffness can be a downside for some users. However, advancements in nylon fabrics, such as ripstop nylon, provide improved flexibility and comfort without sacrificing durability.

Weight: Nylon is lightweight, which is crucial for long-distance hikers who need to minimize their load. However, heavier grades of nylon, like ballistic nylon, can add to the weight while providing extra durability.

Polyester

Durability: Polyester is another popular material, offering good resistance to UV degradation and mildew. While not as durable as nylon, it still performs well in most hiking conditions.

Comfort: Polyester backpacks are generally more flexible and softer than nylon, enhancing comfort during extended use.

Weight: Polyester is slightly heavier than nylon, but still considered lightweight. It provides a good balance between weight and durability for those not facing extreme conditions.

Canvas

Durability: Canvas is known for its robustness and ability to withstand heavy use. However, it can be prone to wear and tear over time, especially in harsh weather conditions.

Comfort: Canvas backpacks offer a vintage aesthetic and can be comfortable due to their softness. However, they lack the modern ergonomic designs found in synthetic materials.

Weight: Canvas is significantly heavier than both nylon and polyester, which can be a major drawback for long hikes.

Cuben Fiber (Dyneema Composite Fabric)

Durability: Cuben Fiber, also known as Dyneema Composite Fabric, is an ultra-lightweight material renowned for its strength and resistance to tears and abrasions. It is becoming increasingly popular among ultralight backpackers.

Comfort: While highly durable, Cuben Fiber is less flexible than nylon and polyester, which can affect the comfort for some users. However, its light weight often compensates for this drawback.

Weight: This material is incredibly lightweight, making it ideal for hikers looking to minimize their pack weight. However, it comes at a higher cost than other materials.

Leather

Durability: Leather backpacks are exceptionally durable and can last many years if properly maintained. They are resistant to many elements, but can be susceptible to water damage without proper treatment.

Comfort: Leather offers a classic look and can be comfortable once broken in. However, leather lacks the ventilation and ergonomic features of modern backpack materials.

Weight: Leather is the heaviest material on this list, which can be a significant disadvantage for long-distance hikers.

Nylon and polyester offer a good balance for most hikers, while Cuben Fiber is ideal for those prioritizing weight savings. Canvas and leather provide durability and style, but come with additional weight. Understanding these materials will help you select the perfect backpack for your adventures.
